Somehow, after what must have been a harrowing 80-mile journey, Binah succeeded in reaching Philadelphia — perhaps with her small child still in tow.

Nearly a decade after her 1812 escape, the Smyths were still hunting for Binah. They placed this newspaper ad in 1821, stating that she was believed to be living in Philadelphia under the name Elizabeth Hudson, earning a meager living by “picking oakum” (pulling apart the fibers of old ropes to recycle the material), probably on the city’s waterfront. Her later fate, and the fate of her daughter, are unknown.
