Hip Hop moves forward by sampling sounds from the past. Like Hip Hop artists over the past five decades, Chesapeake Heartland: An African American Humanities Project records, digitizes, and samples from Kent County’s history, interpreting and passing on the past for both the present moment and future generations.

This summer, Chesapeake Heartland’s Hip Hop Time Capsule will pair Kent County teenagers and Washington College students with musicians and college professors to research, explore, and document the rich history of African American music in Kent County across several genres. Over four intensive weeks (June 23 – July 22), high school and college students will work together to:

  • interview Kent County musicians with deep roots in local musical traditions, inviting them to contribute stories, images, and songs to the Chesapeake Heartland archive;

  • craft poetry and spoken word in response to their experiences;

  • create their own artistic interpretations while sampling from the voices and music recorded in their oral histories as well as the rest of the Chesapeake Heartland Digital Archive;

  • present their artwork and experiences to the broader community via radio, live performance, and podcast.

Together, let’s craft a unique sound and style for Kent County Hip Hop. What artistic traditions and historic voices should it sample? What lyrical style does it move forward? What are its major themes and images? What tensions does it navigate? What does it stand for? What does it present to the world?
