Amos Escapes, 1793
A 1794 advertisement in a Philadelphia newspaper shows that Amos was still free — and that Price was still trying to recapture him — more than two years after his self-liberation.
Professional “slave catchers” in Philadelphia and other cities with large communities of free Blacks earned money by kidnapping people believed to have escaped from slavery. They relied on posters and newspaper ads to connect them with the masters of fugitives.
It is unknown whether Amos spent the rest of his life in freedom.
