A Free Family

Note written by John Wilson, April 29, 1825

Note written by John Wilson, April 29, 1825

This 1825 order for a bushel of corn, written and signed by free person of color John Wilson, indicates that he, like his kinsman Sherry Wilson, could read and write. The white neighbor he was doing business with, William Skinner, was a farmer whom other documents show to have bought and sold enslaved people.
