Justice Comes to Town
Here we have letters written by Thurgood Marshall referencing his visit to Kent County, MD. In the letter dated for the 22nd, we see that Marshall plans to speak to Kent County’s Board of Education. The letter does not tell exactly why he plans to speak to the board, but a further look into the NAACP archival files reveals Marshall addressed issues of education; especially, unjust wages for African American teachers, inadequate travel to and from school for African American students, and a general lack of resources for African American schools.
Thurgood Marshall planned to meet with the teachers of Kent County in Chestertown, MD to gauge the true conditions within the school system here in Kent County, MD for Black people. In the letter dated for the 31st, we see that Marshall was busy during that week, as he also had to appear in Prince George’s County, likely for similar reasons.
The letters are addressed to individuals in Chestertown, MD and I assume from the Chestertown NAACP branch, which was accompanied by people from the local community and members from the Washington College community.
